Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) provides mechanical breathing support through a mask or interface — without the need for intubation or a tracheostomy. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome (OHS)
Patients with OHS hypoventilate during sleep, leading to elevated CO₂ levels. BiPAP or AVAPS therapy corrects nocturnal hypoventilation and improves daytime function.
Neuromuscular Disease
Conditions such as ALS, muscular dystrophy, and spinal muscular atrophy progressively weaken respiratory muscles. NIV supports breathing and can significantly extend survival and quality of life.
Central & Complex Sleep Apnea

How is non-invasive ventilation different from CPAP?
CPAP delivers a single continuous pressure to keep the airway open. NIV devices (BiPAP, AVAPS, ASV) deliver two or more pressure levels and actively support each breath, making them appropriate for patients who need ventilatory assistance — not just airway support.
Do I need a prescription for NIV equipment?
Yes. A physician prescription and documented medical necessity are required. Your doctor will typically order pulmonary function tests or an arterial blood gas to confirm the diagnosis and determine appropriate settings.
Is NIV equipment covered by Medicare or Medicaid?

What support is available if I have a problem with my device?
UnitedCare respiratory therapists are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. If your device malfunctions or you experience a change in your breathing, call us immediately and we will respond promptly.
Can I use my NIV device while traveling?
Most modern NIV devices are compatible with international voltages and can be used with a DC power adapter in a vehicle. Many are also FAA-approved for in-flight use. We can provide a letter of medical necessity and help you prepare for travel.
